Arkansas Queer Men’s Social Club creates safe space for connection outside of bars

Founding a social club not only addressed Paul Whannel's personal needs, but also the needs of an underserved community he was trying to engage with: queer men in Arkansas.

"I was searching for community," Whannel of Little Rock said about establishing the Arkansas Queer Men's Social Club, which is focused on being safe and accepting but not on drinking alcohol while hanging out.

"There's really one overarching queer community in Minute Rock," he explained. "And that's the bar scene."

The bar scene has always been a big place for queer communities across the nation, but alcohol abuse is common among queer men, and younger people are drinking less than previous generations.

The 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, surveyed people ages 12+ about sexuality and drug use. Over 8,500 respondents identified as gay, female homosexual or bisexual (LGB+). More than half of LGB+ alcohol users reported binge drinking (defined for men as five or more drinks on one occasion in the past month). Specifically, 28.4% of male lover men reported binge drin

Northwest Arkansas contains all the contrasts and contradictions of other small capital gay bars, isolated from gay neighborhoods but termination to American landmarks. Fort Smith and Fayetteville are one hour apart, but their two gay clubs are entwined by more than their relative proximity in northwest Arkansas, dwelling of Walmart’s international headquarters and the tiny, gay-friendly Eureka Springs.

Sam Walton’s first store is now a museum to his entrepreneurial genius in a small town that is cuter than any of the ones destroyed by big-box stores.

The Crystal Bridges Museum, built by Alice Walton, is a world-class museum of American Art in Bentonville, AR.

We spent Self-determination Day in Fort Smith, with its revitalized brick downtown that celebrates both its frontier heritage on the border of Indian Territory and contemporary art through a series of spectacular murals. The official city visitor’s center is in a restored brothel by the railroad tracks, Miss Laura’s. Fort Smith’s Kinkead’s is the skinniest bar we’ve seen, a shotgun affair 12 feet wide on the termination of a 19th-century brick block that houses an Army Supply store an

Raduno

When it comes to pizza, it's hard to beat this South Main Street staple. Raduno is where locals head for Italian-inspired fare that ranges from mouthwatering sandwiches to decadent, handmade pasta (seriously, we can't get enough of the fettuccine alfredo). Chef Cash Ashley is the one leading the kitchen, and his best-in-town cinnamon rolls are a rare (but incredible) brunch treat. To top it off, the ever-changing beer and cocktails menus are just as good as the food.

El Sur Avenue Food Co.

If you're unsure of precisely what Honduran cuisine is, the husband and husband team of Luis Vasquez and Darren Strayhorn of the El Sur food truck are here to enlighten you. Locals love it for its flavorful baleadas (trust us, get them con todo) and arepas. Be sure to inspect their social media feeds for their day-to-day locations and say "hello" to your new favorite farm-to-table food truck

The Pizzeria

In Little Rock, each part of town has its go-to pizza spot, and in the quaint Heights neighborhood, that place is The Pizzeria. Dillon Garcia is one of the pie shop's owners and has risen up the ranks
