What does it mean to be gayfriendly? Having lgbtq+ friends, supporting gay marriage, remaining unfazed when one&#;s son or daughter comes out? Going to lgbtq+ bars or questioning one&#;s own sexual orientation? There is no single model of &#;gayfriendliness,&#; but rather different attitudes which vary according to age, sex, country and life circumstance.
Acceptance of homosexuality has undeniably grown, and homosexuality is increasingly seen as one form of sexuality among others. But embedded in this liberal vision is a perspective that is more troubling. Based on interviews with gayfriendly unbent people in the liberal neighborhoods of Park Slope in New York and the Marais in Paris, Sylvie Tissot shows that stereotypes remain, and manage of gays and lesbians has not disappeared. Acceptance is directed towards those who are of the same socioeconomic background, who proclaim their wish to emulate traditional norms of family life, and who do not make any other demands. Gays must be normal but not completely so, similar and at the same hour different, in order to meet the not always conscious conditions of acceptability.

In the context of the La Manif Pour Tous protests in France against homosexual marriage and adoption, Sylvie Tissot set out to understand how strong anti-gay sentiments persist in increasingly tolerant and diverse societies. In Gayfriendly: Acceptance and Control of Homosexuality in New York and Paris, Tissot shares her in-depth study of attitudes towards homosexuality among straight and gay residents of the Marais district of Paris and New York’s Park Slope. These are locations where gay and womxn loving womxn communities have been clear since the s and cohabit alongside the direct population. The Marais is known as an area that is popular with gay men, while lesbians have greater visibility in Park Slope.
During her fieldwork, which took place from to , Tissot interviewed 95 people (two thirds of whom identified as heterosexual) and socialised in cafes and bars, churches and synagogues, and people groups and spaces in both districts. She wanted to first understand how social progress, or a move towards increased tolerance of homosexuality, occurs.
