So I went to Crossings in Lexington one night—first time there. A couple friends had hyped it up. Said it had a good crowd, robust drinks, solid music, and a chill vibe. I figured, why not? I wasn’t even planning to stay long—just grab a drink or two, maybe meet someone cool, then bounce. I get there around 10:30. It’s packed, but not chaotic. A little dark, neon lights on the walls, song thumping from the support. I grab a seat at the bar, request a drink, and initiate people-watching. Not long after, this guy sits down next to me. Older than me, maybe mid-30s. Decent-looking, dressed nice, confident. He introduces himself—Marcus. Starts chatting me up right away. Nothing aggressive at first. Friendly. Flirty, maybe, but chill. He proposals to buy me a drink, and I inform him, “I’m good, thanks.” But he waves the bartender over anyway. Cocktail shows up in front of me. I’m thinking, okay, whatever, I’ll sip it and then spring. But he doesn’t travel away. Keeps talking, asking personal stuff—if I’m seeing anyone, what I’m into, if I live nearby. I give vague answers, trying to be polite but distant. But he doesn’t take the hint. Starts buying more drinks. I keep saying I’m good, and he just… k

Bit to Do

Growing up same-sex attracted in the Louisville area wasn’t the easiest, but I definitely had it better than others in smaller cities. Since I come from a little town about 45 minutes outside of Louisville I was the only homosexual man that I knew, for several years of my life. But before I knew it I made the move to the big city and found my way into my first gay block, The Connection. Back in the day I was convinced it was the best thing since sliced bread. However as I’ve gotten older and seen more and more lgbtq+ bars open around the city I’ve realized some things. Mostly I’ve noticed that the majority of the older bars in the city make me feel like I’m keeping my sexuality a covert. The lights are dim, the music is deafening, and there are plenty of dark corners to hide out in.

Before you go and get your feathers in a ruffle let me say that I realize that when these bars were opened all of the above things were a necessity, especially seeing as where we are from.  I’m simply advocating for switch. If we want our community to see as us equals we’ve got to stop hiding. I’m incredibly happy to notice more and more lgbtq+ bars opening around the city
