In the Vanity Fair cover story, Caitlyn o
After a somewhat awkward exchange on “Ellen” last week, Caitlyn Jenner now says she supports gay marriage.
Let’s talk about why that matters.
Why should we take care of that a woman who makes her living raising Kardashians on reality TV (as opposed to, tell, working as a county clerk) has publicly evolved on a topic that has already been settled in the highest court of the land? (If not, frustratingly, in the court of public opinion.)
Because it’s a win for a rare type of acceptance and support: the kind that doesn’t directly benefit the person offering it.
First, the back story. Jenner appeared on the season premiere of Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show, during which DeGeneres pointed out that Jenner’s conservative politics seem to work against her own best interests — many Republicans’ rejection of same-sex marriage, for example.
“I’m a traditionalist,” Jenner said. “I’m older than most people in the audience, you know? I kind of like tradition. And, you know, it’s always been a male and a woman.”
Jenner added that she doesn’t wish to stand in the way of anyone’s happiness, however

On the topic of same-sex marriage, the 65-year-old reality TV star, who has said she's a Republican, told DeGeneres that she hasn't always been a supporter.
"I have to accept that I remember 15 years ago or 20 years ago, whatever it was, when the whole gay marriage issue [first] came up, at first I was not for it," she said. "I thought, I'm a traditionalist. I'm older than most people in the audience. I kind of appreciate tradition, and it's always been between a gentleman and a woman. And I'm thinking, I don't quite get it."
Jenner added that her perspective on the issue has started to change, explaining that "as time has gone on, I think, fancy a lot of people on this issue contain really changed you're thinking here to I don't ever want to upright in front of anybody's happiness. You know, that's not my job. OK. If that word 'marriage' is really, really that important to you, I can go with it."
When DeGeneres suggested that Jenner still sounded "a minuscule not on board with" same-sex marriage, Jenner replied, "No, I'm on board. It is going to be pretty much the la
Caitlyn Jenner on Homosexual Marriage: Negotiating Identity in a Binary World
Caitlyn Jenner is not new to the media, or to the public eye. She is also not novel to the binaries that exist in society regarding gender — male or female. The transgender society has been negotiating their identity and where it places within a binary world. There is no question that Jenner has shed light on a subject that is normally left in the shadowy, or worse, exploited for its difference. Most importantly, she asks for acceptance on a grand scale and in many ways has achieved that in her mainstream status. Caitlyn Jenner’s success speaks for the progress of acceptance of the transgender populace, but even more significantly, she uses that fame with intent to arrive out to both novel and old communities as a role model.
Recently, Jenner has appeared on Ellen DeGeneres to discuss her transition and to fuel the momentum of her inspiring story. What was supposed to be a week of strong women for Ellen’s premiere week — with guests favor Malala Yousafzai and Hillary Clinton to keep Jenner company – ended up being disappointing.
