Bollywood director and speak show host Karan Johar's autobiography has kicked off a loud debate on being gay in India, writes Sudha G Tilak.

"Everybody knows what my sexual orientation is. I don't need to scream it out. If I need to spell it out, I won't only because I live in a country where I could possibly be jailed for saying this. Which is why I Karan Johar will not state the three words that possibly everybody knows about me," Johar says in the book.

The title of his memoir, An Unsuitable Boy, is a compete on A Suitable Teen, the novel by award-winning Indian author Vikram Seth.

Seth has publicly spoken up against a draconian Indian law that criminalises homosexuality. His mother, a former judge and writer, has also written about Seth being gay.

In an interview Seth had said that it was a "sad dereliction of their responsibility" when famous Indians refused to come out and be "role models" for many others who were suffering silently.

However, Johar's memoir, co-authored with news writer Poonam Saxena, does not do that.

My parents didn't object. I didn't have a brother, so they thought of me as a son and didn't mind if I dressed up as one.

But they did not know about my sexual orientation.

To be loyal, I didn't know much either. I knew that I was attracted to girls but I also knew that it was not right. So I never told my parents. They still don't perceive . Nobody close to me knows. During weddings, I often find women attractive but I have never had the courage to speak to them.

When I turned 20, I had to find a way to express myself. I couldn't discuss these feelings with anyone in the village. But mobile phones came to my rescue. I would dial random numbers and explain strangers my story - anyone at all who cared to listen. When one girl I called told me that she liked my voice, I was elated. It was the first time I had got a compliment from a girl.

These were fleeting moments of happiness. Deep down, I was sad.

I tried to kill myself when I was 24. My parents thought that I was depressed because I wasn't married. They got me married a few weeks later but it was doomed. Within a year, I was divorced.
