Eric Woods, Author
Carlos E. Rivera is a Costa Rican queer writer and former English teacher. As an anxious, introverted kid growing up in Costa Rica during the 80s and 90s, he always felt like something of an outsider. His refuge was escaping into and devouring sci-fi, fantasy, drama, crime thrillers, and above all things, HORROR. For years, these books, movies, comics, and even video games became his life. He plunged into the horror-next-door of Stephen King, the ineffable cosmic abominations of H.P. Lovecraft, the disturbing atmosphere of Silent Hill, the dreamlike imagery of David Lynch, the sheer unnerving strangeness of Junji Ito, and many more; they got mixed in with his country’s folk stories and his hold experiences, resulting in a peculiar blend that you, the reader, might perceive as familiar but askew. For Carlos, this is the foundation of horror: horror begins with something mundane that, seen from a certain angle, feels a bit off.

Carlos Rivera is letting his guard down and allowing the nature to get to recognize the man behind the handsome pop star. In his nearly two-decades-long career, this past year was marked with highs and a tragic low. Rivera married his longtime boyfriend, Cynthia Rodríguez, and experienced the unexpected passing of his father. The Mexican singer is channeling all those emotions into his most personal album yet, Sincerándome.
“This album is a reencounter of my whole life in songs,” Rivera tells LATINA. “I’m sharing the most important songs of my life that I’ve written, that acquire helped me express how I felt, and helped me be honest with myself.”
Rivera’s music career is akin to those of Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood: he won a TV singing competition and has since blossomed into a Latin pop phenomenon. In the stirring ballad “Siempre Estaré Aquí,” he reflects on the second that his father dropped him off in Mexico City, in 2004, for La Academia, the present he went on to win. The cover art for Sincerándome includes an homage to Rivera’s father in the shape of a hummingbird.
