Gay beach chania crete
Maherida
The tiny beach of Macherida is located 14km northeast of Chania and 1km west of the village Chorafakia, very close to Tersanas. The beach is named after the rocky cape in its north end that reminds of a knife (“machairi” means “knife” in Greek). According to another version, it is named after the flower Gladiolis italicus that is called “macherida” in Greek.
The bay faces southwest and is almost always calm. A stunning petite beach with white sand and turquoise water is shaped in the center of the bay, surrounded by sharp rocks. The water here is very clear, because the sea currents change directions several times a day and remove any garbage. It is not organized, however during the last years some houses have been built near the beach. The secluded beach of Machairida attracts mainly nudists. Moreover, it is one of the most accepted beaches for gays in Chania.
The coastline near the beach is a distinct habitat for many unrestrained animals. Among the rocks, just next to the main road, there is the pond of Macherida reminding of a crater with springs with saltish water in which fluid snakes, turtles and seagulls find shelter.
The city bus running to Stavros comes thro Chania, the second largest city of Crete and the capital of the Chania region, is known for its gorgeous beaches with golden sand, its shopping markets, museums, tourist attractions, and amusement options! Even though the old town of Chania does not have the organised gay life that you would expect from a big city, it attracts many gay and lesbian visitors especially during the hot summer months. The gay community of Crete prefer the cafe-bistros and cocktail bars since the island does not include any official gay venues. The pleasant promenades through the picturesque streets compensate the lack of them as they offer a very romantic atmosphere for the couples. All the eateries and bars are gay-friendly but be prudent in front of locals. They do not concern about your preferences but you will hear disgusting comments if you perform in a way that is beyond the proper intimate behaviour. Visit La Brasserie in Heraklion and you will get the chance for a sensual atmosphere, flirting and dancing. For a more idyllic scenery and chance of leisure, heading to one of the many secluded beaches with your partner will bring you much pleasure. Nudist The tiny beach of Macherida (machairi means knife in Greek) is located 15km northeast of Chania and 1km west of the village Chorafakia on cape Akrotiri. The beach is completely unorganised. The beach has white sand and turquoise deep waters. Macherida beach is accessible by secret cars and motorbikes. Crete was one of our first vacations as a gay couple and although there isn’t a large gay scene in Crete we felt very welcome on this beautiful island and have returned many times since! Crete is the largest island in Greece offering everything from pretty soft sand beaches, to rich historical sights, a thriving nightlife scene and mountains inland to travel by car. During our trips we had no issues being gay in Crete and felt particularly cozy around the touristy areas. The most popular destinations in Crete for lgbtq+ travellers are typically Heraklion, Chania, Rethymnon, and Agios Nikolaos, as well as Malia (where there is a young party crowd). Crete has thousands of visitors from all over the world every year and gay travel around Greece in general is very popular with the likes of Mykonos and Athens for example (although execute check out the smaller islands like the gorgeous Ios!). In our Gay Crete Travel Guide we include put together the shortlist of the places we have stayed and visited, investigated what the queer scene is like and put together some unmissable trips for your visit! Whilst it might be perfectly apparent that other .
