District Eagle: Exclusive First Watch Inside D.C.’s Newest Homosexual Bar
Sometimes the answer is right in front of you if you just know where to look.
Case in point: As you walk down the north side of U Lane in Northwest D.C., the space that houses D.C.’s newest gay bar features a small, unassuming storefront — blink, and you’ll miss it. A “Lucky Pollo Peruvian Chicken” stamp consisting of LED lights, with a cartoon chicken wearing a leather cap and boots, serves as an “Easter egg” to those in the comprehend — the rare external clue that more than what meets the eye lies beneath the exterior of the takeout chicken eatery.
Once inside the restaurant, which, despite being under construction, is already equipped with an ATM and three tablets mounted to the wall, and where late-night revelers will eventually place their orders, your eyes inevitably drift to the right, almost by instinct, as you survey the space.
Scanning over the bright yellow and ivory walls and beyond the main service counter, you’ll notice a mid-20th century candy vending machine, a row of candy bars in its display windows. A small note attached to the front of the machine reads, “Out of Order.”

How 'The Eagle' Became One of the Most Commended Gay Bar Names
On a balmy Saturday night in October, a group of perspiring revelers were crowded into The Eagle NYC to watch the annual Mr. Eagle competition. The popular gay leather block boasted a diverse organization of patrons: men of all ages, a couple of women, people of color, body types that spanned the gamut, guys in leather harnesses and some men simply wearing jeans and a T-shirt.
While The Eagle NYC is not a franchise, it is one of dozens of gay bars across the U.S. — and internationally — with the word “Eagle” in its name. It’s part of a tradition that goes back decades.
The History of ‘The Eagle’
In 1970, the first gay Eagle prevent was started after an old longshoreman’s pub in New York City, Eagle Open Kitchen, closed down. The pub had been in operation for almost 40 years, but after the 1969 Stonewall Riots, the new owners of the Manhattan space decided to change course. They painted the walls shadowy and converted the antique pub into The Eagle’s Nest bar. The see quickly became a accepted spot for traditionally masculine-presenting gay men and hosted meetings for biker groups and sports clubs.
