Cross-culture love story explores classified LGBTQ+ world
A passion story between a light, heterosexual, working-class mechanic and a South Asian Muslim drag queen is shining a light on an underground LGBTQ+ subculture.
Feature production Unicorns takes the viewer to the heart of the highly secretive so-called "gaysian" scene - an amalgamation of the words gay and Asian - and introduces its glamorous drag queens.
"A lot of the queens are closeted and only hold a certain number of hours on a weekend where they can actually be themselves, a lot use pseudonyms and possess been ostracised from their families," said Sally El Hosaini who co-directed the film with her loved one James Krishna Floyd.
"On the surface [the gaysian scene is] extremely bright, very attractive... but underneath it's actually a very gritty, real and quite a hardcore world," added Floyd.
"They're a minority within a minority... they're getting attacked and rejected from all sides, from mainstream society, from South Asian communities for the most part, from their religious communities for the most part and from the mainstream LGBTQ+ community
Ben Hardy is well-known for portraying the character of Peter Beale in BBC’s ‘EastEnders’, as well as playing the role of Queen drummer Roger Taylor in the 2018 biopic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.
Hardy was born as Ben Jones on January 2, 1991 in Bournemouth, Dorset. He grew up in the town of Sherborne in England where he attended Sherborne Abbey Primary School and the Gryphon School.
One of his first portrayals was Sergeant Francis Troy in a school film adaptation of Far from the Madding Crowd. Not to mention, Hardy debuted on the big screen as Archangel in the 2016 film ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’.
Thereafter, he has starred in a couple of notable movies and television shows, including Netflix’s 2023 film ‘Love at First Sight’, which a lot of people have been loving ever since it was released in September.
Moreover, the 32-year-old English actor is starring alongside Jason Patel in the sexy queer adoration , ‘Unicorns’, which had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Movie Festival.
