James Gunn Reveals Peacemaker's Bisexuality Was John Cena's Idea
With the season finale of Peacemakeron HBO Max giving viewers some closure to the surprise smash punch of 2022, people are still coming down from the high brought on by this unexpected-in-every-way series. It's one thing to make audiences genuinely concern about a character who admits to killing men, women, and children in the interest of accord. But it's another entirely to give him and his team enough depth to bring them endorse for another season.
Not only is Peacemaker officially getting a second season (not bad for a spinoff of the excellent The Suicide Squad), but that character depth has expanded beyond simply what director James Gunn had even planned for the already eclectic group of hero-ish leads. According to a recent interview, there's at least one important aspect of John Cena's titular character Christopher Smith that wasn't necessarily in the script. But Cena himself added the idea of Smith being bisexual throughout his performance, and Gunn thought it fit so well that it became canon.

Peacemaker Confirmed His Own Sexuality Much Earlier

In the penultimate episode of Peacemaker, Chris Smith (John Cena) has a long-overdue confrontation with his father, Auggie Smith (Robert Patrick). During their violent confrontation, Chris is forced to make calm with the fact his father is not a good person and never has been. Not only did Auggie enable the "boxing" match that resulted in his brother Keith's death when he was just a young male child, but Chris himself was subjected to his father's merciless abuse from a young age, which continued well into adulthood.
For most of the series, Chris is depicted as wanting Auggie's approval, and it takes the latter injuring his pet eagle, Eagly, to make him resolve to murder his repulsive father. Just before he pulls the trigger on Auggie, however, the Colorless Dragon attempts to belittle his son one last time by telling him he hits like a girl and that he knew he was "filthy" from the moment he was born. While Christopher Smith's sexuality was never explicitly discussed in the comics, director James Gunn says that his version of Peacemaker was "always" bisexual.
Peacemaker's bisexuality is revealed in a dim, heartbreaking moment in the first season's episode 7, when he shoots and kills his abusive father, Auggie Smith, AKA neo-nazi supervillain White Dragon. Moments before pulling the initiate, White Dragon berates him: "I knew you was unclean when you were born. I knew when you slept with the whores of polluted blood, and men."

"It was me and John talking about who he is," Gunn tells Total Production. "Peacemaker is a hypersexual guy and that has led him to be a sexual omnivore in a lot of ways."

After first appearing in last summer's The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, aka Christopher Smith (Cena), got his own spinoff demonstrate on HBO Max. Having aired seven episodes thus far out of the first season's total of eight, the series has been a massive punch, reportedly earning a notice as the most-watched streaming series in the planet last month.
Gunn wrote all eight episodes of Peacemaker and directs most of them as well, delivering a raunchy, violent, and hilarious obtain on the superhero genre. In the show, Peacemaker joins a top-secret task force known as Proposal Butterfly in an try to hunt down and destroy a parasitic alien species. In addition to killing scores of people, Peacemaker is also a very sexual being, either engaging in or hunting romantic relations with many of the other characters.
