Queen Latifah might be surprised to learn that she is a gay icon.

The Equality Forum, a Philadelphia-based queer organization, recently released its list of 31 queer icons as part of LGBT History Month. That list includes astronaut Sally Ride, CNN anchorman Anderson Cooper, Holocaust survivor and activist Gad Beck, and Latifah.

But every living icon on the list is openly queer, as per the group&#;s criteria for accepting nominations. Queen Latifah is not.

&#;When the selection was made, we initially believed she was out of the closet,&#; says Malcolm Lazin, executive director of the Equality Forum.

The group&#;s candidate selection committee went through the nominations, of which there were more than , and selected the superior 31 icons &#;for their achievements in their field of endeavour, for their status as a national hero; or for their significant contribution to LGBT civil rights.&#;

This week, the Equality Forum released its eighth-annual list of LGBT History Month icons, 31 gay role models who will be featured on during the month of October. Lots of out-and-proud queer folks made the cut – from Anderson Cooper and Edward Albee to Tracy Chapman and Nathan Lane. There’s one inductee that has us scratching our heads, though: Queen Latifah. 

Now don’t receive me wrong, we’re all pretty sure Miss Queen is a lesbian, but she’s never come out of the closet. Queen Latifah says being a lesbian is not 'a character flaw' as she discusses homosexuality in the black community

The year-old never discusses her own sexuality but discusses the topic in relation to her new film Bessie

Queen Latifah has said that she doesn’t see being homosexual or lesbian as a “character flaw”.


The year-old, who has never publically spoken about sexuality, believes culture and the black group need to less antiquated.


Speaking to Uptown magazine, she said: “People’s ideas in general are antiquated when it comes to who you love. We haven’t moved as quickly as we probably should.


“And the reality is that there’s always been gay people in the black people, so it’s not foreign to us. And not just as a jet community but just a society as a whole.”

Latifah, who is regularly pictured with rumoured girlfriend Eboni Nichols, continued: “Who you choose to marry is really up to you and it’s not something you should be judged on. I don’t discover being gay or female homosexual to be a traits flaw.
