A Portuguese man was arrested and jailed for 20 days in Turkey for the crime of looking gay.

Miguel Alvaro was on holiday alone in Istanbul last June asked the officers for directions trying to meet a acquaintance for lunch and was arrested immediately. He said he was slammed against the wall of a van before being thrown in the back.

Alvaro described horrific prison conditions including cells with maggots, lack of food and water, and threats of violence from fellow inmates. He says he couldn’t contact anyone and officials ignored assistance requests from the Portuguese embassy.

A 34-year-old Portuguese man was arrested by the police while vacationing in Turkey because he “looked gay”, Portuguese media reported.

In speaking to Público, Miguel Álvaro claimed that he was arrested because his shorts were “shorter than usual for a man.”

He said the issue began when he left the apartment he was renting in the Taksim district in Istanbul and saw a group of police officers. He headed towards them, asking for directions on how to get to the tourist district of Balat.

Álvaro says he was immediately surrounded by police officers who grabbed his hands.

A Portuguese guy was arrested in Turkey and kept in disgusting conditions in prison because he "looked gay", he has claimed.

Miguel Alvaro was on holiday alone in Istanbul on June 25 when he went out to meet a ally for lunch.
