Tyler Blackburn

Tyler Blackburn is an American actor, singer, and model. He is finest known for playing Caleb Rivers on the strike Freeform series Pretty Petite Liars (2010-2017) and its spin-off, Ravenswood (2014-2014).

Blackburn also starred in The CW series Roswell, Recent Mexico (2019-2022), and recorded a song with Novi for the show.

In April 2019, he came out as bi in an interview with The Advocate .

“I'm queer,” he proclaims. “I've identified as bisexual since I was a teenager.” His voice cracks as years of secrets and dodging media questions about his sexuality falls by the wayside. “I just need to feel powerful in my own skin, and my own mind, and in my own heart.”

In the interview, he talks about the pressures to "pick a side" and many other struggles faced by bi folks coming out.

“I heard so many things from within the queer community about bisexuality being a cop-out or bullshit or the easy way out or something, and that always stuck with me because I felt the pressure from all sides to have [my sexuality] figured out.”

"Pretty Little Liars" alum Tyler Blackburn is opening up about embracing his sexuality. 

“I'm queer. I've identified as bisexual since (I was) a teenager," he recently told The Advocate. "I just want to touch powerful in my retain skin, and my possess mind, and in my own heart.”

The actor, 32, is best known for his role as terrible boy Caleb Rivers on "Pretty Little Liars" and now plays gay war veteran Alex Maines on the CW's "Roswell, Modern Mexico." 

Blackburn recalled getting bullied for being "effeminate" growing up and said he would often eat lunch in his biology classroom. 

“You develop a shell around yourself for protection," he said. "And you start to make decisions based off of things outside of what you want and who you are. I stopped doing so many of the things that I loved doing because it felt safer. That right there is the outcome of oppression. When you literally have to mute who you are in order to perceive safe. That’s soul-crushing.”

Tyler Blackburn is speaking his truth.

In a new interview with the Advocate, the Pretty Little Liars star is opening up about how his new role in the show Roswell, New Mexico has helped him to be content in his own skin. By playing his personality Sgt. Alex Manes, who is a gay war veteran, Tyler says he is starting to "feel forceful in my own skin, and my own consciousness, and in my control heart."

"I knew this guy in and out," the actor says of bringing Sgt. Manes to existence. "I understood feeling exploited. I understood having issues with my father [wanting to feel] accepted by him. I understood wanting something but being anxious to have it. I understood self-doubt."

These feelings of "self-doubt" seemed to be heightened during Blackburn's youth, when he grew up in Los Angeles, Calif. The 32-year-old shares, "I got bullied a lot by other boys, and I just felt like my mind was slowly being taken from me."
