BONUS FILM #4: Weekend ()

I decided to watch this totally spur of the moment. It popped up on my dash and I was curious, so I looked it up and started watching. I am so glad I did.

The movie follows three days of a male named Russell’s life, where he meets a guy named Glen at a gay bar and brings him home. It’s challenging to explain without giving much away, but it follows their short partnership from one night be upright to a bit more. I want to tell the plot’s a bit difficult to follow and the movie seems to move very quickly, but the series of events happen in a very short time span. It does a very nice job of showing three days in an hour and a half without showing all the unnecessary crap that happens on a day to night basis. There are many parts with little to no dialogue but the brilliant acting shows so much, the entire film would be amazing without any dialogue.

I’m not going to lie, I cried through probably half of the movie. I scream in just about every movie I watch but what surprised me was the amount of period I spent absolutely sobbing, not just getting teary eyed. To give you an idea: the film is 96 minutes lengthy and I started crying at 40, not stopping

It’s Pride Month, even if COVID is too homophobic to let folks mark together.  To kick things off, let’s watch a few movies starring that woman who gave Friends of Dorothy the occasion, Judy Garland.

The animators of this movie were certainly on all of the drugs, weren’t they? Every time a cat launches into song, the already stylized film gets cranked to 11 and then beyond in a psychedelic swirl of colors and patterns. When it isn’t a musical, the motion picture becomes a blend of Van Gogh- and Monet-evoking static backgrounds (which can be quite beautiful, actually) and Chuck Jones design Looney Toons cats. And some of these cats have boobs, by the way. It’s rather a bit disturbing, all told. Not Cats-tier fucked up, but certainly a decision. The piece de resistance of the whole art department is a rogues gallery of art imitations where Mewsette is painted in the style of everyone from Picasso to Renoir.

Not much to speak of in terms of a plot—Mewsette longs for the glamour of Paris and gets swept up in a feline mail-order bride scam along the way, only to be rescued by her roguish love. The songs are passable, middle-school tier lyrics
