&#;In & Out&#; is one of those movies where you don&#;t have to think to enjoy it. Just settle back and enjoy it for what it is- a hilarious movie with a long kiss between Kevin Kline and Tom Selleck.
In the film, Kevin Kline plays student-loved English teacher Howard Brackett. A few nights before marrying a fellow teacher (Cusack) whom he had been engaged to for 3 years, he was watching the Oscars because one of his former students was nominated for Foremost Actor. Naturally, the entire small, conservative town was watching, too, as they all knew him as well. He won Foremost Actor, of course, and went on to acknowledge one of the bravest men he knew- his gay English teacher from his hometown. Brackett, his fiance, and the whole town is in finish shock as their judgments about Mr. Brackett suddenly change. Tom Selleck plays a homosexual entertainment news reporter who comes to cover the story in the small town.

While they have a limited similarities &#; both highlight protagonists on the sprint from the media; both dissect what it means to be a man; &#;Spartacus;&#; Jay Leno cameos as himself as host of the Tonight Show; and &#;In & Out&#; even directly references &#;The Birdcage&#; &#; they are really quite different. &#;The Birdcage&#; is more unabashedly gay, while &#;In & Out&#; is about a man coming to grips with his sexuality.
But of the two of them, &#;The Birdcage&#; has attained a sort of famous cult status, while &#;In & Out&#; has faded into obscurity, and I&#;m here to make the case that the latter deserves as much treasure as the former. What sets &#;In & Out&#; apart from &#;The Birdcage&#; is that despite the latter being gayer in terms of tone and style, &#;In & Out&#; is much better in conveying queer acceptance and foreshadowing greater acceptance of gay life in America in the coming years.
